I've seen it used both for one-off moments of blame-dodging and people who constantly dodge blame. I don't blame the tropers I blame their only being one trope for this.
If you don't see the issue with this, bear in mind that suffering a humiliating moment once doesn't make you a Butt-Monkey, and not everyone who stabs their teammates in the back once has Chronic Backstabbing Disorder.
If we could split this between a habitual trope (this trope) and a one-off trope (e.g. Shifting The Blame) I think that would be great.
