So, I've been thinking about writing some interactive "Choose Your Own Adventure" fan fiction and I'm seeking some advice on how to do something like this.

I'll likely be posting it to Archive Of Our Own and I'm thinking the interactive part will be in the comments section. Basically, whichever choice gets the most support, that's what I'll go with

Has anyone else here written any interactive fanfiction or participated in them?

I came into this thread like 'Choose Your Own Adventure' books of old. But my suggestion would be to just pre-write the entire story out will all choices being individual sections/chapters and if you choose one choice, go to chapter 15 or some such. Having it go at the whims of the readers may be interesting, but might stifle your own personal creativity as an author if you are then forced into a direction you're not comfortable in taking your writing. So better to map out all the choice/decision trees and just build the adventure prior to posting it. Let the readers find their own way through your pre-built story tree.

Spacebattles does Quest writing, which allows readers to vote on preferred actions. But as the above mentions, that often means the author freewheels it to fit their pre-conceived idea and can come across as "forcing the adventure".

If it's done more like a Twine story - then you can branch it off. I quite like linear stories; like in games I often try for the "best" outcome, so getting your choice points could be the key to keeping people engaged in it.
