How come non-index pages are sometimes shown as indices at the bottom of a page?

I noticed that for many pages, the index list at the bottom contains many pages that are not indices, and don't even have the "does indexing" box checked in their page type.

For example, Big Bad has WhatAnIdiot. The Flash 2014, GameplayAndStorySegregation.Deus Ex, Recap.Guards N Retards Swag Party Hostages, Creator.Genm Corporation, Manhua.Fox Spirit Matchmaker, Fanfic Recs.Godzilla, and UsefulNotes.Noteworthy Disney Staff listed as some of its "indices".

They had "does indexing" set in their page type. Mostly. Some didn't but got fixed by resaving the page type anyway. Genm Corporation is a pain, though, since it's Creator.Genm Corporation that's the index but the page got moved to JustForFun.Genm Corporation and I don't know how to mess with page types for redirects

[up] I was able to get to the page type options by editing the redirect markup, but it wasn't set as an index, nor did it have the "does indexing" box checked. I saved the page type again anyway, but it didn't fix anything.

I think I've seen that bug before. As for usual indexes that shouldn't be indexes, sometimes they have tags (for unknown reasons) that also need to be removed.
