I don't think I can make it in the animation industry

This is mostly an analysis but Tl;dr: the animation industry in the US is lagging behind and I don't think my idea will have anyplace in it for being an action cartoon. a purely With some funny bite cartoon.

as i've lurked these forums and the internet in general, i've been noticing pattern in what people tend to like. now there is no denying that we all have differing taste. for one, i will never sit down to watch a overly dark show with no hints of neutral to light moments in the tone. i just don't seem to like it but i do like it when a show is mature, don't get me wrong. you might be into light-hearted shows while the other guy loved him some grimdark stuff. that's all fine and good. but one thing i do not like is bringing other people down, feeling like shit that there's nothing good on tv anymore especially when it comes to cartoons. there has been a few goods, decent ones, mediocre ones, and even downright bad ones.

what've noticed most of all is the high standards of many. there not satisfied. they expect western cartoons to be at leagues with other animation in the industry when it just seems impossible. the current climate is too stubborn to allow that to change unless you support yourself financially. things like hand-drawn animation are becoming a dying breed that's getting kicked out in favor vectorized animation. i get your plea, you want it back but it might as well not be coming back. i hate to sound cynical but let's see this in a business standpoint, taking to time to do it the traditional takes too much time, energy, and commitment to get it done. if we still had these techniques, most of this stuff would have came out decades later.

then there's the countless ideas to pitch. if the company doesn't feel like it's viable in the market, they will reject it. no amount of convincing will change it unless you conform to their wills. it's a fact really noticeably in things such as kid's entertainment. although there have been numerous good shows, there have been piles of bad ones. although nostalgia isn't always right, there have been some great shows in the past that are sadly never coming back and i accepted that as a fact. as a 17-year-old, I had an idea been developing for a while that wished was adapted into a cartoon. I highly doubt it would happen since well for a list of reasons:

  • the genre is an action adventure. although there have been some, they balance it with comedy. too much of it if you ask me.

  • has a fair share of dark moments planned.

  • want the art style to look more like this ,not like this

  • the premise is basically a five human teens chosen as the new guardians for a mystical tree. as such, there given the power to transform into anthropomorphic bug warriors with magical powers. (dumb i know)

  • frame by frame animation is a must regardless if done digitally or not.

with that being said, such a thing would never exist as it seems unviable for an environment that favors junk food for the brain then something that challenges the brain or is even fresh in today's society.

Umm, not sure if this section is right for this and I did skim mostly your post because I'm kind of in hurry right now, but just to note, you can't "make it in" in any creative industry just by having an idea and pitching the concept for someone else to do it, you have to be actually able to do it yourself <_<

Its kind of why there are a lot of video game industry articles about how "game director"/"writer"/"narrative designer" isn't about being "Hey guys I have a great idea for game and you guys will do exactly what I say kay thanks bye". It just doesn't work like that, besides that creative works are team effort, no idea is "good" or "bad", its all about execution. Even in writing books, I'd say you would do better if you get feedback from someone else and even then its not about having talent for writing books, its about learning skill of writing and researching what you are writing about. Actually thats good example of what I mean, "I have a great idea, I pitched concept and how those guys are doing it" is just as ridiculous idea as pitching idea for writer to do writing of the book for you, you can't just expect someone else to do the hard work.

Like, if you have an idea you really want to execute, you have to do a lot of work to actually execute it instead of pitching it to some animation company or tv network to do it for you. There are some youtube original animation series, kind of rare from what I remember since amateur animation is hard, but they do exist.

I don't know where to put it. Maybe we should just make a new forum about range and life issues and what not unless that exist.

[up] also no wonder people barely reply to it. Sorry for the wall of text I just wanted to be more specific with my issue. If you ever had the chance to read that premise thing: is a stupid premkse that should never see the light of day? Sorry for being self deprecating.

Hard to say since its matter of execution and details. Action adventure show with humor and dark moments with five characters with powers around a theme and awesome animation has been done in the past and has worked in the past, but thats the idea of the show not the content of the show. What you are asking are separate questions, whether it would be successful or not and whether it will be good or not. First one is hard to say since matter of whether a show is successful is part marketing part plain luck and part good circumstances(like audience yearning for the that type of show), sure quality of the show does play part in it but even good show can fail commercially if audience never notices it(I'm gonna argue with everyone who claims he man reboot wasn't a good show just on my childhood nostalgia :P). Whether it will be good, well, thats the matter of execution. You wouldn't say "Super hero team up parody about four mutant teenage mutant ninja turtles" is good or bad based on that sentence. Neither would you say same about "game were you play as plumber who jumps on mushrooms and turtles"

Like, just as example, I have thought about for several years about this high fantasy xeno fiction thing about a rogue & princess on run from the princess' mom(who is kind of the "witch/dragon in the tower holding princess captive" fairy tale archetype) that I'd really want to do as a comic, but I stopped asking people whether the concept sounds good or not after I realized concepts by themselves without execution are nothing. Like, at least try to produce a script for it if nothing else, that would make it bit more than just a concept. It is hard to try to learn skills to actually fulfill your creative side you really want to express, but you don't really have other choices than doing that.

Too long to read version: I also have an idea about this kind of nihilistic choose your own adventure fighting game rpg thingy about fire and stuff, but its nothing as ideas are easy and cheap to do. You can't tell whether idea would work or not when its just an idea. But if you are afraid "would bug themed show ever work out", well, I'm pretty sure that could work out, kids like bugs and so do japanese people based on super sentai shows. Like isn't Kamen Rider all about bug themed super heroes?

[up] in some ways yes and no. There's W that's basically dragonfly based then there's drive that has less emphasis on the But theme in favor of cars.

You should make a TL;DR paragraph the next time you post something like this. Anyway, this belongs in Yack Fest in my opinion.
