So this thread is about Kino's Journey which includes the light novel, manga and the 2003 and 2017 anime series.

So i just saw the 1st episode for the 2017 anime. I like the twist that in Country where Murder is legal, the law actually meant anyone trying to kill another for whatever reason is disturbing the peace and therefore the citizens are legally allowed to kill the troublemaker. I wonder if the gunslinger had not once consider that if murder is legal in that country, what's stopping another person in killing him as well?

[up]

I suspect that he was expecting the place to be chaotic due to the law, a sort of wild west. He had no way knowing that the place was as organised as it was. It's made pretty clear that the citizens are far from normal people.

While the visuals looks nice, the 2017 version of the Coliseum storyline felt weak compared to the 2003 version.

Due to it being compressed into a single episode this was to be expected.

I hope this will be the only old arc adapted, I want new stories.

Yep, the older version of the Coliseum was better.

So i just read one of the two manga adaptations of Kino's Journey.

The manga adaption of the Country where Murder is legal is different from the anime since the people don't like killing and actual show remorse of killing the gunslinger that tried to rob and kill Kino.

Interestingly, the next chapter is about a country where everyone has a right to have a gun since the country's main export is selling guns to other countries and everyone enjoys using their guns on the shooting range. While at first it seems like a NRA member dream country, then you learn the country has very tough laws that gun users learn since childhood as using guns during a crime carries a harsh punishment and you cannot use guns against unarmed opponents even if their trying to rob you (beating them physically with hand to hand is ok), which might balk a gun nut.

So the Bothersome Country, I was surprised Kino stayed for longer then 3 days, was the three-day-rule an invention of the 2003 anime?

She needed to get through the land of the people with the wall and estimated that it'd take as long as she said she'd stay for the moving country to get through it. That's why she stayed longer than three days.

This was the first episode of the new series I genuinely enjoyed. I still somehow profoundly dislike the new design for Kino, something about those cheeks and the hat doesn't work. Also it looks sort of glossy, though maybe that's just in comparison to the original that I remember as being intentionally washed out and the latter seemed to work better. Still, hopefully we'll get a bunch of good episodes out of this one.

I wonder how often "original" is used to refer to the 2003 anime when "original" applies to the light novels. I heard that the Colosseum episode was more accurate to the light novels than the 2003 anime.

And Kino's design is matching the illustrator of the light novel's later depictions of Kino.

Episode 4: Wait a minute, we're following Shizu and not Kino this time around. I demand a refund! Kino does show up at some point.

The country in this episode is probably my favorite so far. A giant ship slowly falling into disrepair, populated by people who don't know how to live on land and have to be organized by AI bots. Intriguing stuff that wouldn't be out of place in a sci fi blockbuster.

Part 2 of Episode 5 was my favorite which involved everyone lying for the other's sake and happiness.

I've finally realized it was out/caught up on this series.

A Country Where People Can Kill Others- Still my favorite episode so far. It has everything I want from Kin' Journey. I think the only weak part was the old man's name at the end. It felt trite and completely expected

Coliseum- Definitely a weak episode, especially compared to the original anime. Mostly, I don't think it fulfilled it's promise of showing Kino at their full abilities. Kino one-shot all of those fights, aside from Shizu. It also took away a lot of the subtly of the first adaptation. Kino's Journey's greatest strength was that it never felt the need to spell things out.

Putting this episode nearer the beginning makes it look like Kino will be slightly more inclined to getting involved with people on the road.

A Bothersome Country- A solid episode and a nice expansion. It has the light novel's classic twist at the end, although I can't remember if it was in the original story. It was nice to finally see the Flute on screen. I am a bit disappointed that the Woodsman goes by it's brand name, rather than the Ranger.

Ship Country- I'm not a big fan of Shizu led stories, but this was one of the better one's to adapt. Even though it was a novella by itself, I think they did an alright job of condensing it. Again though, the after credit scene misses the point of the original.

A Country of Liar- Another really good episode and one I was hoping to see on screen. I do wish they had found away to tie the two plots together a bit better though.

Question. Do all motorbikes speak? Thought it was just a Hermes thing.tongue

A Country of Liars indeed. Makes me wonder if overthrowing the regime was also based on a lie.

This is the first time in the two anime that we even see another Motorrad and I don't remember any other's in the light novels, but no one ever seems to be surprised that he can talk, so I guess it is normal, or at least not unusual.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was!

Do we know what tomorrow's episode is about? I'm half-hoping for "A Land of Wizards."

Yet another Motorrad this week. Itsy Bitsy model.

And a bit of a bait-and-switch if you never read the novels or saw the other series. Photo isn't Kino, but they set it up like she might be.

My anime club has started watching the new anime. I watched the original myself a long time ago but don't really remember it.

That in mind, we just watched it coliseum episode and I'm not entirely clear what kino was after. Did she kill the king in revenge for the carriage couple? She says soon after that revenge is ludicrous. Was she duped into going there by the wife?
