The exoticism is played up, though, for instance in how the Japanese language is always unsubtitled and so kept as foreign. It isn't the same distinction as when Fantastic Mr. Fox had animals with American accents and humans with British, because a point is made of adding an English-speaking non-Japanese character to be identified with along with the English-speaking dogs.
Anyone going to answer my question about the budget?
Is it really exoticism if it's just meant for style? The movie isn't really making it mystifying or anything, rather just "it happens in another language".
Death is a companion. We should cherish Death as we cherish Life. The style is called exoticism.
So the movie now seems to be closing in on $65 million worldwide. The question is, how much did it cost? I’ve heard both high ($40 million) and low ($25 million) figures given, but whatever is the correct one, the studio isn’t saying. They haven’t called the movie a disappointment, though, so. . .

It had a limited release in the country. It's very "indie" in treatment here.
It's not really orientalism if exoticism isn't played up. In the film it really is just "a setting".
