In an alternate universe WWII that gets plagued by daemons, demons and devils, mythological beasts from a lot of different cultures, and people who may just be from a futuristic universe, Feliciano and his squadron are attacked by evil demons during the Guadalcanal Campaign, and only he and the Nisei translator he was guarding from accidental friendly fire survive the attack because they fell into a ditch by accident. The story is about the main character trying to overcome everything; from reality warping daemons, sadistic evil devils, enemy soldiers, and many other things. I want him to have a relationship with Harold, the translator that he survived the first demon attack with, but I don't want to be like Humon. I read the review of Niels on badwebcomics wiki http://badwebcomicswiki.shoutwiki.com/wiki/Niels, and I want to be respectful while also showing their relationship. I know that since it takes place in WWII that almost every person will be hostile to homosexuality which is why he tries passing off everything that could out him as just a joke, and that the main character hates himself because of survivor's guilt, and also because he's a religious Catholic man in WWII who is gay and is in love with not only another man, but a Japanese-American when Pearl Harbor and the Baatan Death March is still in everyone's memory. Naturally, he is terrified of anyone finding out, though the marines at Guadalcanal are upset about the racism that Nisei face at home due to working closely with them. Also, while it DOESN'T follow Uke and Seme dynamics, Feliciano does wonders who is supposed to be the woman, and wonders a lot about gender roles, while also being worried that he's "corrupting" Harold because he had only relationships with women before, and that whoever bottoms is being dominated. He's also afraid that he's sorta belittling the bad things Imperial Japan is doing and has done to his fellow Americans by being with Harold, when the people back home would view what they think is a close friendship as fraternization.

The reason why they're in a relationship in the first place is because both of them had to rely on each other in order to make it out alive, saving the other even when they thought that this would mean their death, and they both learned to trust each other while learning that despite their different ethnicities and backgrounds, they both are pretty similar. Also they both see the best in each other, and because they rely on each other in order to get through their trials. They both feel safe when talking to the other, and feel like they can be honest about things they would rather not normally talk about.

How do I avoid being Humon? I'm a bisexual girl, and while I want to have some of the romance and then just showing their relationship going strong, how do I do it without making it just gay sex, or happy but sex adventures? Or the type of person who says that it's a "serious" relationship, but it's just a lot of fluff?

In short, how can I write the story that I mentioned in beginning while also having a gay relationship that gay men would actually read without being turned off by it? I've never been in a relationship, but I know what a "romantic" abusive relationship is, studied how to avoid shipping bed death, know a lot of pitfalls of Yaoi, and I've read a lot of tvtropes pages about LGBTQ people and some Unfortunate Implications about how people write them.
