Is it right to compare my fanfic to these sorts of things?

I'll come right to the point and say that I'm in the process of trying to to write down a sequel series for a show that I like and, at times; I've often mentally compared this fanfic of mine to shows like; Xena, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Gargoyles and a few other original tv shows and/or spinoffs and sequel shows (I have my reasons). But, now, I'm starting to have different thoughts on that sort of thing, since I'm no longer certain if it's really right for me to compare my fanfic; a story that's basically just the result of one fan's desire to continue a cancelled show in an attempt to satisfy his own need for peace of mind, to a show that an actual author actually took the time to create an original concept for.

What do you think?

I, honestly, don't see a distinction in quality between fan-fiction and any other form of literature.

No one says that the Aeneid is bad because Virgil stole Homer's characters, or whatever.

It's possible to find fan-fiction that is much better than 'insert random failed television pilot here'. The perception of a quality disparity just comes from the lack of barriers to entry for fan-fiction (meaning anyone can publish any silly idea or terribly written hack job whenever they want).

So, no I don't see a problem with you comparing your project to professional work. Also, a lot of shows like Buffy start out with quite a few problems and it's pretty common to hear fans of almost anything say things like "stick with it for the first few seasons" and "they were still experimenting with what worked in season one".

Also, there's nothing original under the sun.

Either way, it would probably help out if you told us what you're working on.

[up] Like I said in the first post; my project is a sequel series to a show I liked; American Dragon: Jake Long (look it up if you haven't seen it)
