A novel series about players of an RPG MMO who are trapped in the game (actually an alternate universe) and realize their most important objective now is to build a society from the ground up.
It's the City Building Series trope but 1. the work is not a game, 2. the setting within the work was a game but isn't anymore. Parody looks like the most fitting "playing with" type but it wasn't done for comedy. Or, might it be a deconstruction of the idea that this trope is just for games...?
