All you need to do to keep tabs on a forum thread (unless you mean a Discussion page, in which case I have no idea) is hit the star to watchlist it. Making that automatic seems a tad laziness-abetting to me (not to mention too-active forums usage would quickly lead to said list becoming unwieldy as all hell.)
