Remember how almost a decade ago, Eugen systems (while still under Ubisoft) made a simple WWII RTS called RUSE? And how when [{Wargame: European Escalation}] was later released, some folks wished that Eugen would eventually go back in time and make another, better WWII RTS in the vein of what Wargame and it's expansions achieved? Well guess what just got announced!

There's very little in the way of exact details so far, but it looks like they're staying true to what made the Wargame titles so great. In fact I'd go ahead and just say that it's shaping up to a WWII total conversion, but the promo material mentioned an interest in making the infantry combat more micro-heavy and in depth. The establishment and capturing of territory and frontlines is also a factor now, much like in Company of Heroes, but again as to what the exact effect of the territories be is still up in the air.

EDIT: Updated the video into something that shows a bit more gameplay.

If that's the case, start with Wargame: European Escalation. It's the most simplest of the Wargame titles, and the campaigns serve as a far better tutorial in what to expect versus the RISK-style campaign maps that get introduced in the latter expansions. Downside though is that the multiplayer community has more or less migrated entirely onto Red Dragon, since that's the one title still receiving new nations (ISRAEL AND SOUTH AFRICA W 00 T!!), updates and patch support.

Some new information has been released. Basically, it's everybody's earlier speculation that it's going to be a WWII version of Wargame with a few new tricks is turning out to be correct. And the new "dynamic frontline" is mostly just a cosmetic feature to help more easily determine where the current hotspots are at, as well as give clues as to where the enemy's influence might be strongest or weaning.

There's some more details about how the morale and surrendering mechanics, along with a brief video in the link below.

[up]Not sure - I just copied that list from the official site. It's probably Exactly What It Says on the Tin though.

The game was finally released yesterday.

It's getting average reviews, and is turning out to be what everyone thought it would; an RTS similar to the Wargame franchise, but instead taking place during WWII. It also has a brief singleplayer campaign to help familiarize yourself with all of the units, decks, gamplay mechanics, etc, but the voice acting is atrocious. Just keep in mind you're getting this game for the multiplayer, and you'll be A-OK.

Some bad news regarding Normandy 44's creator, Eugen Systems - their staff are on strike. The claim is that after working unpaid overtime and crunch schedules for almost 15 months, a bunch of employees were suddenly demoted down to "technician" after confronting upper management regarding the terms of their contracts.

The striking employees of Eugen Systems, who if it needs to be reminded are not NPCs

[up]Huh. How did I miss that news...?

It's a bit confusing too; this isn't some large expansion pack to the basegame of Normandy '44 but instead a standalone game, similar to what Eugen did with Wargame: ALB and Red Dragon. But what's more, this title only seems to be focusing around Operation Bagration and nothing else, which means we aren't going to see any awesome match-ups with the previous army decks vs the new stuff.

What does sound cool though is the promise of a 1:1 scale strategic map measured at roughly 150x100 kilometers, which is pretty big, even by Wargame's standards.

Another trailer has been released. Not much new, but it does show off the in-game combat and how they've improved the graphics slightly.

Still no word on a release date yet.
