Much like this. Some added lore I just plain forgot about in the OP.
Mage's Cloaks - Within the borders of Bastion, and especially near important cities, mages of all types have been issued identifying cloaks of a vibrant red fabric with gold colored trim and hemming. These cloaks, while not overly magical, have been enchanted with a minor spell that identifies the wearer as a mage. These cloaks have been commonplace since the Du Pont Incident.
The minor spell is simply one that is detectable by those under the influence of a secondary spell. For simplicity's sake, think of it like the cloak is just a magic item for the purposes of being detected by a Detect Magic spell (if you're a tabletop kinda person).

Pertinent question: What do the various elemental races look like on their home planes?
All are significantly abnormal in a normal world... All are significantly normal in an abnormal world.
Quite the solid question indeed. They look, most simply, as the embodiment of their element. Humanoid, most of the time (as reflected by their form in Ma'Rntal), but mostly that's about it. For Asida, you might consider an abundance of wind or cloud-like...stuff.
So I thought I would mention that the initial plot point is over. Feel free to post more openly, following regular RP rules. I'll keep up as I am able.
