On 47, even having played the game, I don't really get how it's an example?

[up] I was referring to Young Link thinking he can take on a strong adult while still being a comparatively weak child; granted, it happens in adventure games, but it's not something you should count on in them or real life.

Perhaps demonstrating these things using video game cutscene screenshots isn't my strong suit. I decided to look through the webcomics subpage for anything directly linked to, note  and while I was there managed to find a few of the ones that weren't.

Alternatively, we could go with any versions of these that have fewer panels; I decided to err on the side of "more panels" just in case using fewer panels wouldn't establish the point well enough.

Considering at that point in the game Young Link has killed a spider the size of a minivan and a volcanic Dinosaur the size of a school bus, he'd be forgiven from not thinking an adult is too much :-P

On the other hand, said spider and said dinosaur were also pretty dumb themselves, having rather predictable attack patterns and all that. There's a difference between taking on some dumb animal and taking on a human with human intellect.

In any case, while I'm posting, may as well post another example.

[up] Fair enough, then.

Quick question; are real life examples fair game for this thread?

I also vote to lock this thread. It's pretty aimless if you ask me.

EDIT: Please lock this thread already. It's pretty much on life support at this point.

The Zoolander pic from the Didn't Think This Through thread is actually quite illustrative of this trope.

[up] It was originally from this thread; I reposted it in Didn't Think This Through along with many of the other pics when they seemed unlikely to get picked here.

Before this thread's to be considered resolved, I'd like to throw in a few more Simpsons suggestions.

Voting to lock. A precious few of the suggestions have been lateral moves. The overwhelming majority of them have been massive steps down.

I also vote to lock. This thread has run its course.

Also, most of the suggestions are not demonstrations of stupidity that would cause death. Remember, the trope is "character dies from their stupidity", not "character does something stupid".

neoYTPism Since: May, 2010
#67: Dec 29th 2016 at 5:34:48 PM

[up] It's neither. It's "character does something that's life-endangeringly stupid." It doesn't have to have killed them.

Also, should this be the thread for discussing subpage images, or should they have their own threads?

No, it is a Death Trope. It requires the character die due their own stupidity.

The bottom of the description explicitly states:

Note: This trope has been subject to some misuse. If you see any examples or pot holes to this page in which the character's stupidity does not result in their demise, please remove them or point them to one of the alternative idiocy tropes. Suicide and Heroic Sacrifices are not examples either.

As this is a Death Trope, expect unmarked spoilers on the subpages.

The laconic just says it's life-threatening stupidity, not lethal stupidity.

Should there be a TRS thread for this?

[up] Lethal stupidity still threatened someone's life. It just managed to be more successful.

It's still a Death Trope either way.

Sure enough, "capable" of causing death is indeed one of the definitions of lethal; I didn't realize that.

In any case, the trope leaves open to interpretation whether or not the "life-threatening stupidity" has to actually kill them, so perhaps we should resolve that before we decide on how to picture that.

Nthing the vote to lock, at this point it's sounding like desperate attempts to keep the thread open.

If you think the trope is unclear, open a TRS. This isn't an Image issue, and if the trope is changed a new IP thread can be made.

I wasn't sure whether we'd be using this thread or a new one in that case; if the latter, then yeah, may as well close this.

EDIT: TRS thread created.
