Honestly, I still think the XKCD one is a further improvement than just lateral, and I've yet to see much of a case otherwise; the current relies completely on the text, the XKCD one only partially. (Ie. It wouldn't get the message across without the text, but the visuals help.)

4 panels is too many, I think page images should "read" within a few seconds.
