Exactly what it says on the tin!

...I probably used that trope wrong.

The idea that I've been working on is a story where Character X has to hop between worlds to stop Y from ruling the multiverse. Part of the story would be how when X goes to a world, he changes into an inhabitant of that world. Ex. X goes to Water World and suddenly wears scuba gear and holds a harpoon gun. He goes to Ninja World and is suddenly a ninja with sudden knowledge of ninja skills.

EDIT-

Forgot to bring up the big questions. The questions being:

How can I make this kind of story work? Such as...

Would I need to exposition dump every time he goes to a new world?

Would it better to focus on ONE world for a story instead of jumping from world to world?

Does he assume the identity of an already-existing person in the new world, a la Dr. Sam Beckett of Quantum Leap? Or does he just take on the guise of a typical inhabitant while remaining himself?

Have an explanation that you have worked out, and while you write the story remain consistdnt with it, but dont tell the readers. Let them work it out for themselves.

I would let the reader discover the rules as the character does.

Bob Mc Hero looked to Dr. Brainheim for guidance.

"What's going to happen to me?"

"No clue," Brainheim said, pulling the lever.

Mc Hero was suddenly conscious of waves. Why was he wearing neoprene? How had he suddenly learned how to swim?

Great men are almost never good men, they say. One wonders what philosopher of the good would value the impotence of his disciples.
