While this suggestion was waiting to be voted on in the Image Suggestion thread, another image was added to the article.

What is preferred: a straight example (the current) or a Visual Pun (suggestion)?

I think the current does a good job within the context given by the trope name. You can clearly tell it has something to do with ruining the earth. It being far from literal is another plus, since that means an actual illustration of the trope, rather than the trope name.

Also, I couldn't find the suggestion given in the general suggestion thread at all, but if it's before the image was added here, it's been absent from several crowners.

Let's go with the current.

Looking at the page, there's a conflict between the description and the examples. The description is very specifically about literally salting the earth, but the examples (and the page pic) are a broad range of use of scorched earth tactics. If there's not a broader trope for the latter concept, then I think we need to create one and limit this page to specifically be about salting the earth.

I read it as it isn't literally that, since it does say "sometimes literally", which to me means it isn't always literally. It also describes Moral Event Horizon and Despair Event Horizon, which I don't think is possible with only a symbolic act. You need to actually go through with something on the scale of a vastly reaching scorched earth tactic to cross that border (since it says it's the act itself that moves the character across, rather than an indication the character will).

Might need TRS to clear up.

I can go with the current

The current image does fit the general idea of what the trope is about as far as I can see.

I don't think the description is specific about literal salting of the earth. The gist I get from the text is that the act "indicate their embrace of scorched earth tactics and the increase of hostilities beyond it". So, yeah, the current image is fine.

ETA: Also, because the first thing I thought of when I saw the trope name was Jesus's teachings of "be the salt of the earth", the Visual Pun is a really bad way of illustrating the page.

It's about the action, not the result.

The clock's up and the consensus is to keep the current, so I'll tag the page thusly. Locking up.
