for example:

two people are on a date, they ask each other what their favorite book is, but one person never answers and then some catastrophe happens and they go through a lot, then at the end they say "i never told you what my favorite book is, it's ______" which reveals some great irony or insight into the character and gives you a payoff you've been waiting for the entire time?

i saw a film recently that subverted this perfectly and i know i've seen this trope used so many times but i just can't think of any concrete examples off the top of my head.

does this have a name? it's a little like a Brick Joke but a little different. any thoughts?
