I think this new method of how they're doing it is both more fun, less of a hassle, and doesn't require specific team compositions to progress any more. If I want a mono type team I can get through the game without needing an HM Slave, for example. That's just good game design all around.
I can see it being used as a way to not let you surf across ponds. And that is an annoyance.
We already did this with gen 5. I don't think it's that big of an innovation. H Ms should have been done away with years ago.
It's not out yet of course but I'm pretty sure Lapras is for getting across bodies of water at a slower pace while Sharpedo is for dashing through it quickly, so they can have all the water routes they want and people won't whine about there being too much of it.
And it's looking like all we got today was the JP site update. Possibly one for the English site, too.

H Ms should had been REVAMPED years ago. Field moves are all in all good stuff to have the OPTION to use. Things like Dig being free Escape Ropes and the like.
EN site still just has UB-01
Literally less information than the Corocoro issue.

@Hashil: I think the unique thing about Lapras, aside from just being slower, is that you can use a fishing rod while riding it. I think it was the recent trailer with the nifty music that showed a scene of that. I'd been wondering what could possibly make Lapras anything more than a worse Sharpedo, so it's probably that, I guess.
Maybe that you only get Sharpedo later than Lapras?
Continue the bloodline, Fujimaru!Probably. Faw's probably right, too, but I'm sure there are some water routes you'll want to navigate with a bit more precision, so Lapras will be useful in that regard.

So did nothing actually happen today other than the Japanese trailer showing the two new UBs?
"Lucian, don’t be afraid, we’ll make it through this."Lapras being used for more precision actually makes a lot of sense, if we consider there must be a lot of water (inb4 7.8/10, that cliché never gets old). As such, there are high chances of there being areas with strong currents, whirlpools and the like, and using different Pokémon to swim in different ways was already a thing in ORAS, so...
... And that's called jazz! There was no Japanese trailer. It was just a minor site update.
Honestly, I'm fully expecting the update on the 20th to just be Rockruff's evo.
Apparently Beauty's as fast as lightning, and Expansion's strength immeasurable, and its proboscis is tougher than diamond.
Secret SignatureThere's a dick joke there just waiting for the right moment.
i. hear. a. sound.It's really brittle?
Secret SignatureWell machine translating the Japanese site results in this◊ so...
Ultra Beast footage:
Welp, Expansion's English name is Absorption. I guess it makes more sense, but less jokes are to be had.
Continue the bloodline, Fujimaru!Yay! There was a a trailer after all! It just came... really late for some reason.
It's small, but it looks cool.
Goddammit, Schezo... || *insert incredibly thirsty copypasta about Dr. Ratio*http://www.pokemon.com/us/pokemon-news/ultra-beasts-threaten-alola/
"During your adventure in Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, the Ultra Beasts appear—and attack the Alola region! UB-01 was recently revealed, and now there are two more: UB-02 Absorption and UB-02 Beauty. Their numbers and purposes are not known, but it does look like there may be additional Ultra Beasts beyond UB-01 and UB-02."
"The Ultra Beast known as UB-02 Absorption appears in Pokémon Sun, and the extent of its strength is unknown. Its entire body is covered with bulging, powerful muscles. The full force of a punch powered by these muscles would be off the charts! Its distinctively long mouth is said to be harder than diamonds. Could the Ultra Beast also use it to attack?"
"The Ultra Beast with the codename UB-02 Beauty appears in Pokémon Moon. What kind of power does it possess? Its narrow, graceful legs allow it to accelerate with such explosive speed that people claim it can dodge lightning! It is said that any Pokémon that sees UB-02 Beauty, regardless of its own gender, will become infatuated with it and lose the will to battle. The exact reason for this reaction—whether it's an unidentified pheromone exuded by UB-02 Beauty or a hypnotic effect induced by its appearance—has not been determined"
UB-02 Absorption reminds me a lot of Cell for some reason. Perhaps the name is the reason thereof?
Were any Trainer Classes (aside from the ones introduced in this Generation) mentioned in the past?
Ilynne: "… Sidney… that gasmask of hers… why does she wear it…? And… why… why is there no… violet text color…?"Just a little fact: Tapu Koko 1.8m/5'11'' tall. Swolesquito here is like 2.5 times larger than it. Yes, a 4.5 mosquito monster with a needle what is practically a BGS. Yikes.
Continue the bloodline, Fujimaru!
I think it's just that the JP site has updated?
