So how do you feel about paid DLC?

Okay, I was stuck at thinking at $60 as base. And from what I'm reading on the trope page there are notable gameplay differences depending on which path you take, in addition to being two different campaigns.

So yeah, huge communication issue, from what I can tell. I, as a customer, shouldn't have to pay full-price for making the wrong choice, and I, as an average Joe, shouldn't have to research differences on The Other Wiki just to know there is a wrong choice.

Well, neither side is "wrong" really, from a story perspective. If it's about difficulty, Nintendo openly advertised that Birthright is for the people who joined with Awakening while Conquest is balanced more like older titles. And if you feel you picked the wrong one for you part-way through, remember, the other one is half price, not full price.

From a Certain Point of View means nothing if I've never heard of the game before.

And where did Nintendo make that advertisement?

I recall seeing that announced immediately when they revealed the two versions. By which I mean both the plot and the difficulty.

On their You Tube channel, at least. Probably some other places.

I'll admit that I'm at fault for relying exclusively on Game Informer for my gaming news and for not speedrunning through Conquest fast enough before post #1 happened.

At any rate, I've caused enough shitstorms to know how this one will turn out...

Yeah, I feel this entire thing could have been avoided if you had bluntly informed your brother that no he cannot side with Hoshido. That or you had done your research and was able to explain to your mother why this was not scummy business practice.

The strange thing is that I'm pretty sure the Japanese version doesn't give you the choice if you don't have other routes downloaded. Gameplay videos of that part of the game from the Japanese version seem to imply that...

Either way, your brother should be able to skip straight back to the choice with the Branch of Fate option on the main menu. If he insists on Hoshido, you could go to the store and get an eShop card.

I'm gonna kinda spin this in a different direction, just to sorta highlight where I stand in all this.

Communication and transparency seem to be becoming the big issues nowadays, what with so many non-standard releases in the AAA. You've got this game treating its main story branches as separate games in their own right, you've got SFV deliberately releasing early for e-sports and taking a MOBA-style approach to its character DLC, you've got the new Hitman and the FF 7 remake both being released episodically, and who knows what else.

Now, I like to consider myself well-informed. I like to consider it an advantage that I have as a consumer. But should video game companies be anticipating that I will be bringing that level of diligence?

VIIR is not episodic. Its a case of "holy fuck this is massive and literally impossible to simply release all at once."

[up]The result is the same, and Watchtower's point stands regardless.

I have no nostalgia for Final Fantasy VII, having played that in the PS 3 era and finding that everything outside the combat aged terribly. Not touching that remake until there's a complete collection, or at least the parts are all heavily discounted at the same time.

[up][up]The question then becomes how much warning is sufficient warning. Both Nintendo and Capcom informed people to varying degrees (Capcom on its blog; Nintendo on the initial announcement, its You Tube channel and subsequently several gaming news sites, with commercials highlighting the plot difference but not the gameplay difference due to time constraints). I think Hitman is doing enough, since it literally pulled all preorders then put itself back up with clearly labelled versions (Don't know about you, but the words "Intro Pack" have me Googling for details right away). FF VII R remains to be seen.

I will, because there is no shortage of other games to play...?

Cool!

So, I think I already mentioned that my favorite DLC, overpriced or not, is the Citadel DLC for Mass Effect 3; what would you all say is your favorite DLC?

Artorias of the Abyss.

Was made from the remains of stuff that just didn't have time to be in the game (as in it was not planned to be made from the getgo, namco-nandai rushed the game), is easily on par if not better in quality than the main game, and was just generally well worth the money.
