I for one would be much more willing and able to answer grammar questions than re-write people's posts. I'm not really interested in doing others' editing when I've got so much of my own planned.

Here's the thing: It's not our job to teach people how to write. The Help topic is a courtesy, only. There are lots of language resources out there, and our first concern is keeping the wiki presentable. That's job number one, two, and three. If this comes across as hostile, I'm not sure how to help that.

It does come across as hostile. Also, I'm not talking about job one, two, or three, here. Tropers do a lot of things, and want to do a lot of things. This is like job #50. I would like to emphasize the fact that I am not asking the mods to do anything extra.

Okay then. Assuming other people think this might work and foster more of a multilingual community, I can't do this alone: My confidence level is low, I have never created these kinds of threads before, and I don't know what else might be involved in making them work.
There seems to be a lot of traffic going through the get help with English thread, but even more needing help that get suspended from editing. I suspect the stark and uninviting system currently in place for helping those with grammar issues is scaring away people, both those that need help, as they realize it could take many months to get English grammar down, and there being only one service available to them, getting potential contributions edited, and those that wish to help, as helping in that thread looks an awful lot like work, rather than casual conversation, which most of them would probably be more comfortable with.
Consequently, I think if we want people to actually stick around long enough to get help with English, we also need an ask questions about English thread, where people can simply straight up ask questions about English grammar and word usage. I also think we need a talk in English thread, where those learning English can shoot the breeze for practice.
