That's not how the rule works. If you take a shorcut, you can't go for the buoy until there's membrane contact with your opponent. After membrane contact (basically getting to touch the opponent, or they touching you) you can go for the buoy.

In that scene you were talking about, Saki was allowed to go for the buoy because there was membrane contact when Asuka scored a point by touching her back.

Oh, right, they had it like that. I have a few problems with how the rules are actually balanced, but as I mentioned before, that's not really the point.

[up]x4 What this and Prince of Stride had in common with Free! was that all of them had the usual beats of a sports anime, but lacked the interminable scenes in which every action in every match was explained to the audience either through internal monologue or spectators commenting on it. It helped that Flying Circus is such a simple looking sport of course and that they only had 12 episodes to tell a story.

They had that here too, but just not as much, since it's relatively simple. And I don't really mind that part, as long as it's done correctly (or bullshitting in a funny way). For instance, I like the explanation of how turning off the balancers make them more effective (which I've mentioned before, but I tend to repeat myself, probably because I've written everything at least twice already), since it makes sense and correlates to aerodynamics of real airplanes.

Asuka joins the "tanoshii demons"

Well that was fun. VN becomes a sports anime is pretty novel although it did come with the predictability of a typical sports plot. But well it was "beautiful". Too bad the same cannot be said for all the repetitive animation used which were for non-important scenes anyway. They put the budget where it mattered. Don't think there will be any sequels though since all that's left from the VN are routes they didn't adapt. I do want to play the VN now though
