Yeah, he's probably one of the best actors we have over here. And well, yeah, missing that connection is indeed somewhat understandable. I mean, I'm pretty sure Terra Nostra aired a good few decades ago, so it would a rather noticably age difference and thus harder to recognize as the same person.

Hello again James! How are you! I come here because I wanted to talk to you because I have something I want to ask. How does Brazil feel about "Supernatural" Novelas. They are very rare in Latin America the most recent I can think about is "En Otra Piel" (In Another Skin or Part Of Me) which was itself based on El Cuerpo del Deseo. Alto Astral seems REALLY out there with its Supernatural Elements while En Otra Piel it was just the protagonist who died and came back in the body of someone else. Brazil is REALLY big on Historical Novelas LOL. And I love them too so I cant blame them.

Well, there have been a few that would qualify as such over the years. So, maybe not quite rare, I think they are still kinda uncommon. Not many that were quite as out as Alto Astral though.

I have actually talked about a couple of those before. O Profeta was maybe on par with Alto Astral on how present the supernatural elements were. Then there was Sete Pecados, mainly by virtue of having characters that were guardian angels and such. That novela tended to be more comedic though, specially with those aspects, so it wasn't quite as out there.

Sete Pecados was comedic? I was hoping it would be on the dramatic side since I dont quite gel with comedic novelas unless they have a more dramatic main core storyline.

The plot still seems quite interesting so Im going to check it out one day LOL.

Well, kinda comedic. The overall main plotline was still pretty dramatic. The comedic parts were more left to the subplots and such. But yeah, the overall story was pretty great and I think you should check it out if you ever get the chance too.

TODAY ON ALTO ASTRAL A WHOLE STADIUM BLEW UP! Thank god it was evacuated in time! I wish I had payed more attention because that was epic. It probably was the payoff for a storyline that had been building up for a while! I guess I will never know, because I dont care enough to watch it illegally.

I think I watched and remember enough to be able tell about it. Basically, it was the payoff to the subplot of a villainess, who always to be attempting to appear heroic, emphasis on appear, by either engineering such events and then swooping in to defuse them or by solving something that had happened indepedent by the way predicting it due to some sort of spiritual connection.

Oh, glad that got settled then. Sounds really annoying. It's good to have you back. smile

Really? How long has it been now? I would have thought that it would have by now ... Never watched that one, fortunately it seems, so I don't know how exactly long it is supposed to be, but they all tend to have a similar lenght as far as I can tell.

Oh, yeah ... Seems like I mixed up things a bit ... I thought it was another for some reason, not even sure which. I did watch enough for that and maybe a little more, though mainly in bits and pieces. Still not quite sure how long it is supposed to last, however.

MY GOD ALTO ASTRAL IS STILL ON!? WHY GOD WHY!?

It looks like its going to last forever at this rate! Which is exactly the name in Latin America (Por Siempre or Forever).

Also I want to ask about this novela I read here on TV Tropes.

Roque Santeiro: Originally conceived (and canned by censorship) at the height of Brazil's military regime, this one got a new version in the mid-80's, achieving ratings close to 100% in Brazil and some other countries. The largest open-air market in Africa is named after it.

WOW That's awesome. Do you know anything about this novela? It sounds like its at least talking about!

Really? How long has been going on? I can probably find out how much is left based on the lenght of the original run ...

Not anything firsthand, unfortunately. It was obviously before my time and I didn't manage to catch re-run, if there was any. But looking it up, it seemed that the whole censorship thing goes like this: It was based on a play called O Berço do Heroí, which was itself censored during the same period. For the novela, they changed a few details to try to hide the fact that it was basically the same work, but the dictatorship had a wire tap on them and caught it being said that it was being done to deceive them, so yeah ...

Wow. Dictatorship's sure suck!

ALSO HI I MISSED YOU MAN!

Also what was the play about? I didnt understand anything from what I read on Wikipedia.

OH! I forgot, Netflix has some Original Brazilian TV shows now! Do you like those? I mean 3%, Samantha and some other name I dont really remember.

Well, from what I got, it is basically about how a town created a whole mythic and heroic figure out of a guy from there, who had supposedly went to war in Italy during World War II and died bravely there, when in reality he was very much alive and deserted the army. He then goes back to the town and tries to divulge the truth, but since a lot of people there profit much from the myth, they in return do what they can to keep it alive.

As a critic of process of making myths out of real life as well as some aspects of national society, it was probably due to those facts that the dictatorship censored it, since they too made a myth of their "revolution" and such.

And oh, really? I wasn't aware that 3% was a national series ... Someone I know watched it and didn't think it was good, but I probably should see it for myself anyway ...

And that is awesome! That is indeed a great one. I'm glad that you will get to enjoy it! [awesome]grin

AMIGO! I missed you! I thought you died or something lol. I really do hope Regra do Jogo comes next because I've been wanting to watch since forever.

Also, I do not like Moises and The Ten Commandments. Its terribly acted and written, which is a sad thing since I loved the Bible story. Its a sad day when a superproduction does less of a good job interpreting the Bible than something like Super Book. I love Super Book but its not a super production lol.

The dub is terrific, but it cant save the show. Too bad. Thank god for Joia Rara and Paravision! Did you get my PM? A new novela called Parts of Me (Sete Vidas in Brazil) is airing on SNT now!

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-37381477

This is so awful! Have you heard anything about this? I love Nature and rivers but this reminds me Nature is to be feared and respected.

I don't know much about Sete Vidas. Never watched that one either. Did you try it? In anycase, it's great to hear that Joia Rara did come through in some form. That was a truly great one. Have you been watching it? Are you enjoying it? if so?

And yeah, I heard about that. That tragedy was all over the news at the time. It was indeed quite saddening ... sad

I'm brazillian and a fan of soap operas. Until now, we have at least four Complete Monster villains from brazillian telenovelas approved here, all proposed by my: Santiago, from Avenida Brasil; Josiane, from A Dona do Pedaço; Julia Zaccarias, from Os Mutantes, and Magnolia, from A Lei do Amor.

Has someone else proposed C Ms from Brazil soap operas?

While Sua Vida Me Pertenece was made in 1951, it was not a Telenovela per se... which was the really first one called a telenovela?

I think the first TV show that was really called a Telenovela was 1958´s Senda Prohibida from Mexico.

While my experience with telenovelas is more with Mexican ones until 2006-ish... I think watching the commercials of how the story is going makes me to predict quickly...

  • Who are the good guys
  • Who are the bad guys
  • Who are them into?
  • How the bad guys will fail?

I put it quit on Mexican telenovelas when they decide to take on narco themes... while I always want to have characters out of good/bad shape (it means gray characters that are, like we expect, human people that tend to make mistakes).... I dislike the idea to have criminals posing as heros, antiheros.. or whatever they are
