Update on age estimates:

We've since learned that Namari is 61 years old, and that elves die of old age at 500. (From the phrasing it appeared that 500 elf years ~ 100 human years).

Estimates based on this:

Chilchack is 29, depending on which source they are using for Halflings/Hobbits the average lifespan is either 120 or 220.

If we set 80 as the average human lifespan (done to make the math easier since this a rough estimate anyway) that means a halfling year is 0.666 or 0.3636 years to a human year.

So Chilchack is between 19 to 11 years old if transferred to human equivalents. I'm guessing he's closer to 19 (he doesn't come across as 11) and thus 120 is the average lifespan for Halflings. Makes sense too, since Chilchak called elves and dwarves "long lived races" as if Halflings are not long lived.

Marcella is less clear, though she can't be more than a young adult equivalent if she was attending school with Farlyn. In fact, I'd probably guess at her being the equivalent of 16 to 19 years in human age. So she's probably between 70 and 90 years old. This uses the 500 years old age given as elven lifespan.

We know that Laius is younger than Chilchack (since he refers to Chilchack using polite pronouns once he learns his age). Not sure if we get anything specific any where, but I tended to put him in his early 20s. So I'd guess 21 to 24.

If Farlyn is 19 or so, that would make her two to five years younger than her older brother, so that probably means Laius is on the younger side of that age range.

If Namari is 61 years old, I can't see her being more that late twenties, (and probably early twenties) so that suggests something like a 300 to 350 year life span for dwarves.

So my guess on their ages would be:

Senshi: Around 140 years old (equivalent of a man in his 40s assuming a 300 to 350 year life for dwarves)

Namari (the dwarf former party member): 61 (equivalent of a woman in her early 20s)

Marcelle: Around 90 years old (equivalent of a young woman about 18 years old)

Chilchack: 29 years old (equivalent of young man around 17 to 19 )

Sureau (the samurai): A man in his early 20

Laius: About 21 years old

Farlyn: About 19 years old

For the new chapter with shapeshifters:

They eliminated all the fake Laius: Chilchak-Laius = Giant Liaus Marcille-Liaus = "I must consume" Senshi-Laius = Dazed Liaus

They eliminated two fake Marcille: Chilchak-Marcille = Nice hair, but fake spell book (the time reversal spell is a callback to chapter 31 when Chilchak told Marcille not to reverse time). Senshi-Marcille = Witch Marcille

That leaves the Laius-Marcille, which makes sense because Laius was learning magic from Marcille, so he'd know her spellbook. We're left with: Rare Hairstyle Marcille Let her hair down Marcille

Either Laius didn't pay attention to her hair and so gave her generic hair down style, or he actually remembered the rare hairstyle and Marcille did let her hair down because the blizzard was cold. I'm actually having a hard time calling this one correctly.

They eliminated two fake Chilchaks: Laius-Chilchak = Scarf wearing Chilchak Marcille?-Chilchak = improper lockpicks Chilchak

I'm not certain, but I think Chilchak the bad lockpicks came from Marcille. Marcille has known Chilchak longer, but Senshi studied a bit with Chilchak. And both Laius and Senshi used Chichak's lockpicks to eat the Mimic with. It looked like Marcille did not.

Not sure how to differentiate the remaining Chilchaks (the single shot of them after removing the other two isn't a good angle for comparisons). However, I'm betting the shorter, more childlike Chichak is the fake Senshi-Chilchak.

They eliminated two fake Senshis: Laius-Senshi = Lacked holes in his helmet Marcille?-Senshi = wrong spatula shape

I guessing it was Marcille who got the shape of Senshi's spatula wrong, since she has paid the least attention to the cooking.

It's obvious that the more chiseled nose Senshi is the fake. Must be Chilchak's Senshi. Not sure how it will be differentiated in story though.

Also, I purchased the Yen Press volume yesterday. Apparently "Sureau" is "Shuro", and for some reason Kuro and Namari called humans "tall-men".

I can understand the former, but the latter just seem weird. Same with "halfling" and "half-foot"

I guess they translated "long legs" as "tall men." I bet "tall men" is considered the "more accurate" translation, but "long legs" is surely better at getting the point across.

Sometimes I wonder if they bother to have anyone who has actually read the manga double check the translations.

Yeah. It's mentioned by Shuro's party that his name is Shirou and Laius and his party just messed up the pronunciation, which is pretty funny.

It's been fun.

[up][up] The only instances of "long-legs" I remember is when the party is captured by the Orcs after the sorcerer. It's clearly meant to be diminutive, so I don't think it's the actual race name. ...I'm now wondering what it actually says in Japanese.

I remember 'tallman' and 'tallmen' being a thing in the Japanese, too, probably glossed over katakana. If someone can give me a chapter reference before Laius's party met up with the creepy guy who wants to kill him, I can check.

It's been fun.

[up] First instance is during the fishmen chapter. After the Kabru party gets revived, Kuro sniffed the area to smell who took their treasures (insects). He mentioned "tall-man", "dwarf", "elf", and "half-foot".

Second is right after Namari and Senshi caught the Undine. Namari said how "tall-men" are weak despite their bigger size.

Yup, just checked it out. It's written as 人間 (human) and glossed as 'tallman'.

It's been fun.

Glossed over? You mean that thing when a kanji has a certain meaning, but the furigana says something else?

RedSavant Since: Jan, 2001
#136: Nov 18th 2017 at 8:16:29 PM

Yup, yup. So it means 'human' and is read(/said, in universe) as 'tallman'.

It's been fun.

Ah, then I guess fan and official translators simply chose one over the other. Thanks for clearing it up.

New chapter posted.

We finally get to see that fantastic dog impression Farlyn told us about.

Volume 6 just came out in Japan, which means I'm back to the series!

I'll post my full thoughts once I'm not on my phone, but first off: man, I hate Shuro and his entire fawning band.

It's been fun.

Oh, whoops, never did post my full thoughts for volume 6.

Well, suffice it to say that I really don't like Shuro at all. I understand he's out of his depth and all, and he surely thinks he cares for Farlyn, but he still faffed around the upper layers in service to his own reputation (long after Farlyn would have been digested), attacked the only people who actually tried to save her, and plotted to start an actual war just because he didn't get his way. Spoiler tagged because I'm not sure where the scans are in relation to the published chapters, but probably scans are ahead?

It's been fun.

I thought it was funny when an elf remarked: wow you've changed so much in only 15 years.

I honestly am still confused about how they reverse engineered hippogriff meat from them, like was logic "it changes gryphons into hippogriff and vice versa"?

Well, I'm caught up, and goddamn, do I love this series. Everything about it (Shuro excepted) is just so good. The characters are charming and have so much depth, the dungeon mechanics and reworks of classic monsters are fascinating, the food actually looks pretty great... I love it.

Next chapter should be out on February 15, so I'll need to see about snagging a copy of Harta magazine then.

It's been fun.

This month's chapter unfortunately wraps up the mushroom shenanigans, but it makes up for it with a title card that shows what all the cast members would look like as each of their races (plus gnomes, just for kicks).

It's been fun.

He's so small and squishy.

I also like how everyone looks pretty okay with their usual race and then Izutsumi is like 'ugh'.

Halfling Senshi looks like a baby waii

Chilchak looks like a tired middle-age guy in every race except halflings lol
