Why is (rationally) wanting to commit suicide considered so bad?

Seriously, I don't get why wanting to die is seen as so horrible and awful by most people I talk to about it (e.g., my mom). I mean, if you sincerely feel that way and not just saying that you do for attention, you're aware of the consequences of doing so (e.g., you won't come back, people that like/love you will miss you, etc.), and you're mentally stable, I don't see what's so terrible and heinous about it all. And yet, almost EVERYBODY treats people that actually want to commit suicide as if they're freaky weirdos or something. Why is that?

There are a few reasons we are not going to open this conversation.

  1. We have previously banned topics such as anti-natalism and other nihilistic points of view because they accomplish nothing save to start arguments. The vast majority of us prefer being alive to being dead, thank you very much.
  2. Discussions of suicide in an online forum invite people with suicidal thoughts to express them. This compels us to take action due to the potential for liability.
  3. Nobody on the staff of this site has medical training and the Internet is not an appropriate place to seek counseling for mental health problems. If you are having suicidal thoughts, you should contact a suicide prevention hotline in your area.
