Every once in a while I either read or hear a story or see a film about a manager, teacher or instructor whose whole style of dealing with their subordinates is a constant stream of abuse. Either they are constantly yelling every insult and obscenity they can think of or they do it quietly if they have to. Nothing is ever good enough and getting any word of praise out of them is virtually unheard of.

I have heard some praise this management/teaching style claiming it pushes subordinates to go past their limits and keeps subordinates on their toes to do their past.

Others claim that it is counterproductive. The constant state of fear and stress takes a toll on both health and performance. An abrasive style may be useful in the short-term or in brief moments like in the military or a football team it is ultimately self-defeating.

From your experience, what is your take on this style of instruction?
