I work at a bookstore. We got a new box in and found this leather/vellum book and I can't figure out the language. Anybody know? Thanks!

From this, I can tell that you're dealing with the Necronomicon.

I suggest that you get rid of it ASAP.

I think it looks quite similar to this? I am most definitely not sure though as I cannot read that script but some of the symbols are present in both!

...That looks like some mighty complicated Algebra.

The fact that only 140 characters are allowed here is honestly so disappointing to me.

[up][up]Thank you! It does look like Ge'ez/Amharic. Wooo now we just need to find someone to give us a rough idea what it's about. Demonic sacrifice maybe?

I am very interested to learn what it is about! ^_^

I suspect a bible with verse numbers in red. About a half/third of them happen just after a paragraph or section break.

You must agree, my plan is sheer elegance in its simplicity! My Tumblr

This is supported by the fact that the Ge'ez language is the liturgical language of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church.

We're pretty sure it's a Coptic Bible, printed in the rough neighborhood of 1600. The cover is leather but reinforced with the same kind of wood as the Ark of the Covenant (according to the Bible).

That is truly astounding! You are lucky to have found such a thing! ^_^

Trying to describe it, my first thought is "you know that spellbook in Hocus Pocus? Like that but without the eye...so far as I know." I'll post more pics tomorrow for any lurking antiquarian nerds (like yours truly). I'm geeking out over it, but I'm of a rather excitable constitution[lol].

It certainly is most exciting! ^_^
Do you have any idea of what will be done with it?

It is the same language present in the Voynich Manuscript. It reads:

"SPEAK NOT THE UNHOLY WORDS OF FOR IT BRINGS ABOUT AN EVIL PRESENCE. BE FOREWARNED OF DEATH AND DOOM AT THE ENCROACHING CLAWS OF HUNGRY CANDLEJACK. FOR SPEAKING HIS NAME MEA..."

Odd. It stops there. Just when it was talking about Candleja...
