Since I was seven years old, I've been keeping up an awesome Massively Multiplayer Crossover up in my head. Back then, I actually planned to send real screenplays for it to Hollywood (one of the things I did not understand as a kid: copyright). Despite those hopes being dashed, I've been considering writing it all down and putting it up on Fanfiction Net.

Now, I know that these kinds of things can be terrible, but when they're great, they're great. So, the question is, how do I get something great, and not the mad ramblings of a seven-year-old? Thank you!

A crossover works better if they have enough similar themes or a similar tone to each other, of course, but as your example demonstrates, even fandoms that shouldn't work together can be wonderful. The thing I personally think makes or breaks a crossover is the worldbuilding aspect. A crossover writer should put in the time to figure how the two or more fandoms can exist together without contradicting the rules of each canon (or knowing how precisely to break the rules and have it still make sense). Bad crossovers generally just go "It would be awesome if these characters from these fandoms met!" then don't plan things out.

However, I've not written many crossover fanfics (and the only one I have ever finished is terrible), so take this with a grain of salt. wink

Also, I know too well the childhood lack of awareness of copyright. [lol]
