I had a very negative outlook on Gantz. There was gratuitous violence, hammy dubbing, exaggerated dialogue, unsympathetic leads, and a mostly enigmatic plot. Twenty episodes later and I think the cast most of whom are dead have become the most human characters I've ever seen in an anime before. They're cynical, they don't believe in The Masquerade, they adapt when The Masquerade starts trying to kill them, they listen to the people who know what they're doing, death causes significant grief, none of them are "over the top" or larger than life, and best of all, there's significant character development.
