So, a new game from the Magicka devs. Looks rather fun!

It's channelling the Verhoven Starship troopers vibe. Some key points:

- Community campaign, culminating in an invasion of the enemy homeworld

- Upgradeable characters

- power ups need to be called down, using a combo system

- Always on friendly fire

- Cross platform play (Vita, PS 3, PS 4)

- MECHS

- Insane difficulty curve

Heard this was a bit of a darkhorse during the PSX event. It definitely looks like something to have a fun romp through.

The New Age of Awesome is here! Not even the sky is the limit!

I watched a gameplay video of this yesterday. It looks kind of interesting (I personally get a very 40K vibe from it) and like the design of all of the stuff.

This looks pretty good, I was a big fan of Magicka, and so far I might buy and give it a shot. The whole "Super Earth" plot look hilarious, and so far people are saying it's solid game. Arrowhead Studios is one intresting indie developer.

I wanted to get into Magicka but never had enough friends online on PC try it out.

This I may get and try because you can do most of it 2 player... of course the later levels will likely be an arse, but it looks to have some good match making.

Simple, pick up and play - it reminds me of Alien Breed on Steam. Fun times!

If I get it, I will report back on my findings!

This game. Ohmigod this game...

Is glorious.

From the federation style intro, the codex entries, the chatter from your character. So Verhoven. The ott action....

So, it can be done solo and the early planets pretty much should be. Levels you up, unlocks equipment. Each of the races fights noticably differently So while you can brute force with one loadout it encourages you to try different things.

Mega 40k vibes from the drop in and the mechs. The cyborgs are s lot like ork...

Coop is fun, and at early levels not hard... But I can see how it will get insane later. Cyborgs in particular I find a nightmare.

The campaign is fun and encourages you to contribute and Rush to defend regions. Constant progression.

Definite recommend and its only 14 quid!

So I decided to get the game. And holy crap I have no regrets, it's like a top-down Destiny, only much better, more engaging, self-aware and not overhyped. The friendly fire, manual relading, and pushing d-pad in order to activate sites makes missions incredibly engaging, there point I was like "Come on, go faster damnit". Story-wise, it's a funny plot about a government using propaganda to recuirt soliders, the game knows what its story is and runs with it in a funny way. It really feels like some sci-fi action film, worth the money!

Now the ultimate question is, is making a page for Helldivers worth it?

Definitely!

The community conquest is a little slow but that could be because it's early game for me currently. Tried defending a capital and managed to actually do it solo.

I like how easy the drop in and out is, plus how intuitive just running around with team members is.

Haven't seen any advanced units yet so looking forward to that.

I like how what you do also has an impact, keeps you playing. And the kill counter on the main menu is fantastic. I think it's going to have some shelf life to it - it'll be interesting to see what they do with it!

Also cross console play is brilliant! If anyone wants to have a game, it's Lashotron on psn. I am also a fan of the mecha... All your dreadnought fantasies in one package!

Ok, I put up a page and a few tropes, I'll be adding more but you can do the rest if you want. Scratch that, I think I'll need some help actually.

Just expanded the page with a few more examples and a YMMV bit. Anyone else interested, have a gander.

I'm actually debating buying this game or not, mostly out of fear because I'm scared that I'll lagfuck everyone.

Eyyyyyyyyyyy. It sounded pretty cool to me when I heard about it, then I read "PS 4" which I totally didn't have.

People were whining that there were 14 pieces of DLC. They didn't know they came out after the PS4 version in concert with the community. If you want them all, you can save $20 by buying the premium version for $39.99.

I need to play this again, had a cracking time first time round. Just never seemed to find a good enough group for the harder missions - still had a grand time of it though.

Probably should pick up some of the DLC for it. Any of them "must haves"?

Picked this game up for free on PSN last month, any tips for a big damned noob? Or just anyone else actually playing on PS 4? This seems like a game that really benefits from proper coordination. Or maybe I just need to play more and learn the rules.

Also I've encountered a bug where certain weapons won't fire (at all or just under certain conditions), but apparently there is an option you can change to sort that out, so I'll be trying that next time I play.

[up] You can solo earlier missions and I would advise doing that, just to learn the ropes. Mainly because when you get a team it can become a right cluster.

Mostly co-ordination just happens, even with strangers things do just tend to work. I definitely work towards unlocking the vehicles because you start as fairly squishy. I still jump on occasionally.

I'm a little tempted to drop a few quid on some vehicle DLC or something, since I got the game for nothing. Just dunno how much time I'm going to put into this, I have a lot on my gaming plate already tongue

And yeah, I've done a few difficulty 1 and 2 missions, they're pretty easy, even solo.

It's a good pick up and play game - you don't need to spend hours on it, which is quite nice. Even difficult missions aren't too long.

With some turrets and a good mech unlocked, you can do pretty well. Toughest enemies have to be some of the Bug tanks, I have to say. The "protoss" expies are annoying as they teleport spam and the Cyborgs have a tendancy to spam you with missiles, so as long as you can output enough dakka, you're fine.

Worth it for a spin, to be honest, and to see through to winning a war, but it's definitely not a game that you need to pile hours into.
