It's one of those policies that claims to be fair, consistent and doesn't name any one religion. But in practice it impacts Muslim students due to the faith's regular daily prayers.

Yes, this is similar to the French 2004 law that restricted religious symbols in public schools, which mainly affected Muslim students wearing hijab, but the government claimed that this law was equal to all religions, because  Christians too can't bring big crosses to the school or something.

......................

In this case,  Katharine Birbalsingh defended the ban, in X/Twitter arguing that:

At Mechaela, those from all religions make sacrifices so that we can mainatian a safe secular community. Some Jehovah's Witness families have objected to Macbeth as a set GCSE text. Some Christian families have asked that we do not hold our GCSE revision sessions on Sunday. Some Hindu families have ojected to dinner plates touching eggs. And Our Muslim families have signed up to the school knowing that we do not have a prayer room.We all eat vegetarian food so that we can break bread togehter at lunch were children are not divided according to race or religion. We all make our sacrifices so that we can live in harmony.

For reference and according to the studnet lawyer, she was:

making a “modest” request to be allowed to pray for around five minutes at lunch time, on dates when faith rules required it, but not during lessons.

Now that the news story's been updated, it's worth noting that:

  • Birbalsingh has complained that legal aid was available to support the case. Which is very much in line with her wider politics.

  • The student was excluded from the school after raising the complaint, which the court has overturned. Sounds as if this was seen as retaliation for speaking up.
