Similar to the \"housing bubble\" crisis of 2008, some ideas have been floating around for some time that eventually student loans will have a similar crisis.

My question is, how? and what will the outcome be?

My theory is that eventually payments will skyrocket so high that eventually, colleges will begin to actively TURN AWAY students who cannot pay. The outcome will be an even more selective system.

Is there a reason we need to have this conversation separately from the General Economics thread? It's been talked about quite a bit there, and if you want the posters who are informed on the matter to contribute, making an entirely new topic seems counterproductive.

Well, I may be exaggerating on the "quite a bit" thing, but it's been quiet there lately — a great time to bring in a fresh topic.

Basically something to keep in mind is a lot of the debt is tied back into college sports, and the insane salaries of the coaches there upon in. So we have a College Coach Bubble tied to the debt bubble.

The debt issue itself also is tied into driving down demand, i.e. people willing to pay for stuff they want, since they have to focus on axing bills.

Many were increasingly of the opinion that they'd all made a big mistake in coming down from the trees in the first place. - Douglas Adams
