it's for moments when a character takes place in a contest or competition only to wind up winning a lesser prize, which kicks off the plot. such examples as the "Moonlight Madness" episode of 'Golden Girls' where Rose enters several sweepstakes only to win such things as a Prostate exam, and a vacation to Hawaii, instead of the main prize, and this is just one example of the several times the plot device appears in the series. see also the song writing episode where they come in second as well. it also appears in the video game "Leisure Suit Larry 6: Shape Up or Slip Out." which gets the plot rolling.

usually it's used to give the plot a kick start, but without the protagonists being constant winners at everything they try.

Are there more examples or is this two weak/broad a topic? (if it isn't one already.)

Please use Trope Finder to search for trope concepts and YKTTW to propose new ones. And please work on your grammar; it's bad enough to earn you a wiki suspension.
