Xopher, movies are kind of expensive to make. They were pouring millions of dollars into making movies BEFORE Titanic. You've got some very weird preconceptions here. Also they pour millions of dollars into them because 1) big name actors can negotiate for big paychecks, 2) depending on the movie the special effects can cost quite a lot, 3) spending that money is part of how studios guarantee that their movie is of good enough quality to show off. Obviously there's failures, but it's not a big mystery as to why so much money goes into the process. And quite often they can earn that money spent back several times over.
