I think OWL was already going downhill even before that when the Blizzard sexual assault lawsuits went in full swing. That caused a lot of sponsors to pull out of OWL. I think that was a beginning of the end for OWL as OWL before then wasn't really proving to have staying power either.
I don't recall the exact numbers but I do remember hearing that OWL was not performing well even before all those controversies. When it first started it pulled out big numbers but by 2020 it wasn't pulling as much as it used too, likely not enough to make up for the expenditures.
And then the controversies came in and the sponsers pulled out and the players themselves started turning on Blizzard then and later on with OW 2. Yeah......
I honestly can't feel too much sympathy for the fate of the OWL League as Blizzard screwed the pooch with it in so many ways. Blizzard also has never had a good track record with forcing a e-sports scene. They have tried before multiple times.

Blizzard desperately wants to have events and tournaments as big as Dot A 2, they still haven't gotten over Valve getting it over them.
It's fitting in a way considering how Blizz absolutely ruined their game to pander to the e-sports players
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Official Overwatch x Le Sserafim (female kpop group) collab.
Seems like Nintendo accidently leaked tonights hero annoucement: It is Mauga, for real this time.
What can I say except it's Mauga?
Continue the bloodline, Fujimaru!Geez, the similarities to Maui are really there, huh? It's not just one thing, they have very similar builds, faces, tattoos, hair, personalities, even names.
Wild how it took 4 years to get another Talon character.
And we know about the next two heroes:
- Venture. A DPS hero for Season 10. Seems they are related to the Petras construction site and have a drill weapon.
- Space Ranger. Season 12 support. Not much known other than space related and her name being a codename
And now the OWL is dead. Hope nobody here was too attached to it.
OW twitter was taken over by Mauga and he just posted this
Overwatch crossover event for Cowboy Bebop
As a fan of the anime, I love that they recreated the opening theme but with Overwatch characters.
So the PVE campaign might not be a thing anymore.
But we their is another update.
TLDR - New hero
- Heros are no longer locked behind a battle pass
- Mythic skin shop
- New map: (Runasapi, push map)
- New game mode (clash)
- Map reworks
Good, good. I likey.
Love ruins all.I thought PvE campaign was cancelled A LONG time ago? Or has something changed and I've been out of the loop?
There was still going to be some sort of campaign before, although it would be much less extensive and ambitious than advertised. The Invasions missions were supposed to be the beginning of that. But recently most people who were working on PvE were laid off and the opinion from within Blizzard is that it's not coming back.
So the whole reason it became Overwatch 2 is dead in the water
I mean the true reason for the rebranding was probably the monetization rework.
The supposed engine-restrictions that the PvE needed always sounded like a smokescreen, especially since nothing in the one PvE campaign they released really felt different in complexity compared to what the mobs and bots in OW 1 could already do.
So essentialy they turned Overwatch into Overwatch 2: The Search for More Money
Thus leading into Overwatch 3, The Search for Overwatch 2.
I wonder if we'll get an official press release from Blizzard on the matter monday/tuesday, or if they'll just pretend it did not happen and just quietly stop mentionning PvE altogether.
Almost certainly the later, there'd be no point to do the former unless this somehow affected the game's playerbase.
And seeing as the last PVE content is like, more than a year old, it seems unlikely anyone who hasnt already abandoned the game is staying there for the PVE content.
So why shine a light on their own failure. Admitting it publicly is liable to make people feel the game's support is ending and already shrink a - by Blizzard's own account, small playerbase.

The thing that's really starting to piss me off is Overwatch's obsession with making the game an Esport over a fun game. Everything gets immediately countered. Ults are almost always either ridiculously trivial to dodge or get immediately canceled. The supports have "get out of jail free card" abilities (like Moira's teleport or Ana's "immediately win every fight despite being a support sniper" stun pistol) that make fighting them a pain. It feels like I'm constanly being robbed. This was prompted by Sombra, with her stealth and near instant hack with generous auto-aim, immediately nullified my ult.

Why waste time when you can see the last sunset last?
