Overwatch

tbh, I think that "wanting it now rather than fostering a community that would naturally build it up over time" describes... pretty much everything about their attitude towards Overwatch and its playerbase, really. Even back when OW1 first dropped all the pro gamer stuff around it seemed kinda forced

I'd point out that, in general, EVERYONE sees some profitable 'x' and wants a slice of it no matter how the pie was actually made to make it successful in the first place or without realizing that too much market competition can spoil things for everyone.

We're seeing the same thing in streaming right now; Netflix did really hit it off with their streaming service. So everyone wanted a streaming service too; Hulu, then Amazon... HBO, Paramount, Apple, imdb, Disney, that one that flopped instantly because it was 5 min episodes...

Which is now ruining the market because there's too much competition. Every streamer wants to make bigger content to draw more audience, but need to up prices to justify it causing a smaller audience that they need to gouge more. The full audience needs to choose which one streamer they'll keep because it's too expensive to have more than a few so now the audience has to be extremely picky where they put their money. Especially if password sharing is being cracked down on too.

And the ultimate result of that is A LOT of streaming services that are flopping hard and even the big ones are struggling to sit in the green even with each other.

Bringing it back to games; same idea here. Not every game is going to have an eSports audience and it takes a lot to cultivate that audience. But those companies see $$$ from eSports and "I WANT IT NOW".

In games, I think similar happened when WOW opened the MMO market; everyone wanted an MMO without figuring out what made WOW successful and... also without realizing that MM Os actually don't make a ton of money and need to be structured in a specific way to keep them in the green and operational.

We'll probably see a lot of eSports scenes crash in the next year or two with a resurgence a few years after by people who know how to actually make that work.

I wonder if they'll reduce the production team just like HOTS and enter the maintenance mode. It's highly unlikely because HOTS didn't generate interest unlike OW 2, but I wonder if it's gonna happen.

Not yet. I imagine that's a big reason why Overwatch 2 was introduced to Steam - to give it once last chance to grow before deciding to slow down production.

This, I remember hearing a bit back that some of the players in OWL weren't even payed that well for the stress and poor conditions they were put through. Most of the money of OWL was likely going into Blizzard's higher ups.

I think the only OWL players that actually made moneys were streamers beforehand or had some clout. XCQ, despite how much I despise him, was one example of that.

Pretty much. I think this is a final hail mary before Overwatch as a franchise dies. Blizzard has always been extremely defensive when it comes to having their games being sold on other platforms after Battlenet was launched a while ago so the move of putting Overwatch 2 on Steam atm seems highly unusual to me. The only way I could possibly see Overwatch being saved is if they just sell it off to another company (who may or may not treat it better) or if Blizzard actually cleans house and cleans up completely which I think would be damn near impossible at this point. They have burnt too much of their public trust to anyone that isn't a massive fanboy.

Of course I am sure that game still will have diehards but every Blizzard game has that so thats not too surprising. Sunk cost fallacy is a powerful drug.

I mean... they technically did just do that. Perhaps Microsoft will do what they did with Killer Instinct and move Overwatch to another developer they own that will treat it better.

Super saiyan sun goddess

This has to be the most underwhelming reveal yet. Character fine but we barely know how she plays...if you ignore leaks.

The gameplay trailer is here and for me it's looks cool but I won't pay $15 for an pve mode thing and I hope this character is free to get. What's your guys thoughts about Illari and May I redownload the game to try this character? Btw, I'm kinda surprised this is the second game who are representing Peru people since Tekken 8 did that before.

The ultimate would be so annoying with both the slow and the massive Ao E and the high damage. Combo with a Ao E ability like Grav and it is a nightmare.

I'm actually done. I swear to god, I distinctively remember OW 2 devs saying they removed slows and other CC for design philosophy. Where are those???

It's only for the Ultimate. And it can be cleansed rather easily by Kiriko... provided that you don't get instantly Biotic Grenade right after.

Heh to think they neutered and uprooted so many character abilities just to appeal to competitive players.

Look how that turned out.

To the point where it feels like you got cheated and wasted your ult because of some tech that neutered it in a split second. I once lost a Deadeye because a D.Va snuck through the smoke obscuring my view right as I fired and she had defense matrix deployed.

So... anythign interesting from a lore/story/character standpoint? Most of the stuff i've seen are from pharah/mercy shippers going "OUR SHIP IS CANON NOW"

I kinda don't like that. Feels like when writers don't know what to do, they pander to shipers as if it's going to fix the core flaws of the story. RWBY had something like that.

Anyway, Ramattra basically is forcing omnics into a Hive Mind. Since humans won't tolerate having omnics around, being "one" in the iris seems like salvation for his people. Yes, he is mindsucking omnics into the iris.

It is only canon from Pharah's side. Mercy is still clearly paired with Genji in the cinematic. I dread going on the internet the day they make the Genji / Mercy relationship more explicit.

Illari's origin story is up. Her backstory seem to be inspired by the fact that pockets of Incan still preserve their culture. So the story took an optimistic stance that they regained enough influence to build a whole separate city.

Wasn't Mercy already a grown ass woman when Pharah was still just a young girl who was hanging around cuz her Mom?

Seem like it. Mercy is canonically 37 and Pharah is 32. So when she joined Overwatch in her university year Pharah would have been 13 or 14
