We have a storytelling trope about things being color coded to tell them apart, and seriously the best picture we can think of is a traffic light? It's a pretty weak example and doesn't show anything about its story purpose.
May I suggest Academic dress◊ (you can tell somebody's field of study from the color) or resistors (it's literally impossible to tell them apart without the color coding) or euro bills◊ (compare to dollar bills which are all the same color).
Rhetorical, eh? ... Eight!
