Is possible to misinterpret a story?

While I can't argue that everybody isn't free to their interpretation of a story or argue that what an author intends is the best interpretation of a story, I can't agree that a story can't be misinterpreted.

For instance, Harry Potter, because its the first thing that pops into my head, could be interpreted as Dumbledore's quest to force a child to fight a monster that most grown adults can't even speak the name of. It's not that there isn't evidence to support it, it's that the idea is so very off base from the message that is trying to be communicated that I can't logically consider it correct.

This is reminding me of Alan Moore and how he gets freaked out when fans come up to him and gush about Rorschach and how great that character is. He certainly seems to think that stories, or at least points being made in his stories, can get misinterpreted. Misaimed Fandom is definitely a thing that happens.
