That only holds if you're using the centre of the Earth as your frame of reference. It doesn't take into account the Earth's orbit around the Sun, or the Sun's orbit around the centre of the galaxy. Relative to an non-rotating reference at the centre of the Galaxy, the Earth moves 7,300,000,000 km in a year. From 1955 to 1985, it travelled about two-thirds of a light-year.

Sorry to restart this, but I have this to ask: If they do a remake, should they keep the terrorists as Libyans, or a different ethnicity?

[up]Libyan is a nationality - you're for looking for the word Arab.

And, considering how much Libya is currently in deep shit, they could be kept, just with a few changes to their name and political reasons.

[up] Okay, my bad. Thanks

But in my opinion, I think it should a different country, since the Libyans went after Brown due to the fact they had intel on them. Making them related to the people who overthrew Gaddafi would be hard to swallow.

Honestly that plot point was rather thin anyway. Theft of plutonium would have been HUGE, especially if they had stolen enough for a bomb. The whole thing would have ended with the Libyan nationalists, maybe Marty, and Doc Brown in federal prison for a long time.

Could just go with cold fusion. That's the kind of casual sci-fi that would float these days.

That would be serious Misapplied Phlebotinum. Doc Brown would look like a complete jackass if he invented a clean, safe, hyperefficient source of energy and didn’t share it with anyone.

It fits with his eccentricity. This is a guy who spent 30 years and a family fortune pursuing something that could have been a total bust. It would be funny if he invented something that solved the world's energy problems but could only think to use it for a time machine.

Plus the basic plot doesn't work if you don't have some sort of exotic engine or something.
