It's scary how these two are alike, and yet unlike.

Both:

  • Scientists.
  • Vastly underestimated among their field, yet recognized by a specific few.
  • Gave up, or lost their potential.
  • Contributed to a downward spiral. For Walt, this was his family. For Bishop, this was his son's future, and the universe as a whole.
  • Affiliated with drugs.
  • Went to great efforts to cover their lies.
  • Have megalomaniacal alter egos that are dramatically portrayed on-screen, even as separate characters.
    • Their alter egos are highly successful men of power and influence.
  • Both alter egos are more violent.
  • Major operations affected their current states.

Bishop:

  • Uses drugs to enhance his science.
  • Uses drugs to save the day and solve supernatural cases.
  • Aloof, but brilliant and loyal.
  • His lies were born out of love, designed to protect his son.
  • A brain surgery reduced him from the pointed, scientific mind he used to be, to an gibbering, unstable woobie who, nonetheless, is doing more to help the world.
  • His alter ego Walternate is a general in charge of a militant division.
  • Family is a cause.

White:

  • Uses drugs as a platform for his own talent as a chemist.
  • Uses drugs to make money and often evades the law.
  • Acts aloof, is loyal only to himself, and is somewhat gullible.
  • His lies became pure deceit, designed to protect himself. Eventually, he even managed to deceive himself.
  • His cancer diagnosis forced him to take a level in badass, to leave the measly role of a school teacher and become a figure in the criminal underworld.
  • His alter ego is a mythical kingpin who sells the finest quality product.
  • Family is an excuse.
