Steel Diver: Sub Wars

Sort of old news by now, but yeah. Nintendo made a slow paced, fully three dimensinoal movement, team based online shooter. And it's free.

And surprisingly intense, despite the "slow paced" mention above.

Now the latest update added online Friend Matches, along with some other additions.^note Like getting rid of friendly fire, for better or worse.

The game might not have an instant appeal, but playing some online matches and sinking other players subs in a giant fish tank can hook you in.

It would be nice if it could be played on the Wii U system as well.

True. Though Nintendo seems to be trying to push more into cross platform compatibility, what with the Amiibos being planned for both Wii U and 3DS and some 3DS games having extra link up features with the Wii U versions.

Though just true crossplatform play would be nice.

Relating to Sub Wars: don't use gyro controls. The periscope will develop a mind of its own.
