  • If the protesters "admit defeat", the pro-Chinese will frame it as a "genuine victory"
  • If the protesters do nothing, the pro-Chinese will present it as "stupidity in their defiance"
  • If the protesters intensify their uh, protests, the pro-Chinese will show it as a sign of them being "actively detrimental to the good of all"
  • If the protesters genuinely start signing praises for the Chinese Communist Party, the pro-Chinese will consider it as "a clever ruse to lull the Chinese authorities to complacency"

Dont let the opposition define your choices. Whatever the pro-government groups may claim, you make counter claims. You dont limit your options out of fear of what the other side may do. That's giving the initiative away.

[up]The last bullet point is for all practical purposes already fulfilling your "not limiting your options" statement. Even if they do that genuinely and truthfully they would still be considered "enemies of the state", or that they are "hiding something to undermine the government". Which is par for the course obviously, for such authoritarian regimes.

Looks like Operation Solarpeak is going to an end with the last camps dismantled.

Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai arrested over democracy protest, quits tabloid - (Reuters) - Hong Kong publishing tycoon Jimmy Lai, an outspoken critic of Beijing, has stepped down as editor-in-chief of the popular Apple Daily after being arrested for refusing to leave a key pro-democracy protest site in the center of the city.

I expect the cycle of protests to keep rising and falling until either there is some kind of real democracy in Hong Kong or, more likely, the PLA slam them down in a bloodbath.

Hong Kong is now once again divided by protests - albeit this time around, it's the socio-economic issue of the impact of mainland tourists and "parallel traders", mainland merchants and businessmen who purchase the cheaper and better quality products in Hong Kong to sell home, at the forefront of the issue.

Besides this, a recent move by Hong Kong's education system to introduce Western-style "liberal studies" as to encourage students to be aware of current affairs has prompted your expected backlash from the mainland that such a program encourages "fake liberal education" and is "dangerous".

There was news that officials from Hong Kong went to Beijing to seek "help" in quelling protests.

Rise from your grave...

Here's a cool documentary about the Hong Kong protests - filmed with a 360 degree camera rig, you can look all around including at the cameraman (which due to his using a camera boom can become a bit of a game of Where's Wally :) )

Looks stunning and really shows how big these protests became. To view in the browser, hit the big play button then use your mouse to look around. There's also options for viewing with an Oculus Rift VR headset.

Joshua Wong has been barred from entering Malaysia.

Well, figures, Malaysia doesn't want to offend the Chinese (or anyone who isn't in the First World, period), but considering the situation in the South China Sea this may not matter at all.

Though it's strange that the Home Ministry was not aware of the ban order from the RMP.

[up]That's because the RMP, despite being under the Home Ministry, acts independently most of the time (to the point that the Home Minister had opposite opinion with the IGP). In fact, the ones who has the real power to ban him is the immigration, but the police do influence them when it comes to things like this.

Anyway, in my opinion, further discussions about the ban on entry should continue at the Southeast Asia Thread.

The Hong Kong government has approved new rules that came out of Beijing.

Saw pics of people now making protests in the news.

Joshua Wong has been charged with “unlawful assembly, and inciting others to take part in an unlawful assembly”.
