I'm currently writing up a vigilante serial killer thriller set in 1986 and, though I was originally going to set it in 2013 London, I had a change of heart and decided to go with 1980s America. The reason why is that the story, being a homage and deconstruction of 1980/90's anti heroes, has a style that fits the era better. Miami, given the large influx of cocaine that went through there at the time and the attractive neon lighting and palm trees, popped to mind but it would seem too similar to the video game: Hotline Miami (which was an inspiration).

Never mind, I've decided to set it in New York anyway.

DC, Philadelphia, or Chicago would also work.
