1) Make him/her a young adult or middle aged

According to theory, most heroes tend to be in between the 20 and the 40 years old because is the range most people will find it sympathetic.

Note that while most western societies are heavily biased towards the elder age, in terms of demographics, still the 20-40 range seems to appeal the most to the audiences.

2) Set up an emotional conflict.

Our character shall not just have the resolution to get a goal, that goal must be fair (as in gettin ascended in work, gettin a love interest, gettin laid) but the odds are all with him/her. For whatever reasons hr/she couldn't achieve it before but now he/she just can.

3) Suddenly, odds are gone. Bets all off. No retreat possible. Twist the knife
