@19: The argument the way I read it is that this trope is for characters who should be, or are conceived as, something more than destructive forces of nature that just turned out flat, whereas kaiju and other such monsters were never meant to be anything more than destructive forces of nature.

I prefer 17.1, although 17.2 is acceptable. The gray image that was originally there should remain pulled on grounds of JAFAAC.
