Carrying over from another thread in the Film section lest I cause a threadjack:

I finally manned up and saw this yesterday. I took a ton of notes because I barely understood what was going on, and I think my brain crapped out about 2/3 of the way through. On the other hand, nothing really struck me as a dislike, other than I'm not really a fan of rampant destruction and explosions.

I had a very vague basic idea at times, but when you literally haven't seen a single movie remotely in the same genre... Again, there was nothing really that made me go "I don't like this", but I really could use a ton of Cliffs Notes or something.

So I won't get outside my comfort zone unless I try new things. But if I try new things, no matter how hard I try to enjoy them, my brain just subconsciously goes "nope, not in your comfort zone" and refuses to accept anything even if I go in with the expectation of enjoying it.

Long story short: what is wrong with me? Have I become so closed-minded that it's now my instinct to auto-reject anything not within my microscopic comfort zone?

And how do I even get out of this and onto new things if, despite my best efforts to just go in saying "this is unfamiliar but I will go into it liking it", my brain just turns to paste partway through and refuses to do anything with what's being presented to it?

Don't get into it, if it makes you feel uncomfortable. It's no good to force yourself.

[up]And then I know nothing about nothing and can't get anywhere in conversations or creative endeavors. The thing is I simultaneouly want to and don't want to try new things somehow.
