So this thought began in the thread asking why Nintendo has gone on for this long. The idea is that why isn't there a widespread use of an interface between dedicated video game consoles and mobile devices, that would allow mobile devices to be used in place of the console's own controller (where applicable)?

I know that the Xbox 360 and the Xbox One have Smartglass that allows a smartphone or tablet to interface with the console, but it doesn't actually replace the controller.

Now the reason I bring this up is because the ability to use a mobile device in place of the console's gamepad for certain games would help to introduce audiences of mobile games to more traditional games, and thus bridge this "cultural" gap.

Well I know in Battlefield 4 you're supposed to be able to play as a commander from your phone on an app.

Dunno, never tried it though.

All I know is that my fighstick would get a lot less use if I could use my Vita as a controller for my PS 3.

Now not all games need to be able to be controlled by a mobile device.

Mobile devices are rather limited in their level of interaction.

But for games that already have simple controls surely the benefits are much bigger than the costs of adding the interface.
