Months ago I found a 2012 article which uncovers and unveils the history of Sponge Bob, how it came to be and what it was like for the staff to work on the original run. I actually think it's incredible and pretty much sums up why the original run (1999-2002 or 1999-2004 counting the years that the episodes aired) was the way it was. It was a team effort (Stephen and Derek, the original showrunners were close friends and often frequented holidays with each other and their kids).

Unfortunately the show ended when it was going strong, which upset Nickelodeon and many fans of the show. But the show was quickly relaunched thanks to a deal with Paul Tibbitt who took over during it's reincarnation. Meanwhile years after Sponge Bob's original end, many of the old writers long left the show to work on Phineas and Ferb and Adventure Time.

All from the above article.
