It depends on what kind of zombies your dealing with. If it's the classic George A Romero zombies then go ahead, but if it's the zombies from 28 Days later maybe you should consider something else.

Although it's debatable if the creatures from 28 days later are actually zombies.

I think a crossbow would be an excellent weapon in controlled situations. If you just want to pick off individual zombies without attracting more, you can't beat the crossbow. As stated above, it's main advantages are that it's quiet(er), rugged, and the quarrels can be recovered, at least most of the time. Definitely it's greatest weakness is how long it takes to reload.

I ran a zombie RPG where one of the characters used a crossbow to great effect, but fell back on her pistol when things got out of control.
