I was telling a family friend who runs a podcast about the story discussed in this thread and my interest in working with retro cliches in order to comment on present society. He asked me if I could collaborate with him on a kind of retro-futuristic segment on his podcast. The format would be short, probably about 1-2 minutes long.
I've written two "pilot episodes" so far. The first pilot was hilarious, involving human-alien organ transplantation and interspecies marriage but the humor was too dirty for the podcast, and my collaborator also wanted to make it less spacey and focus more on Earth, so I wrote a second one this morning, about a paradoxical attempt to make combine time travel with mass transit. This one also features a Captain Ersatz of Orson Welles ("Orville Weller") as the narrator (the first pilot had a booming-voiced "Future Guy" as the narrator, as an homage to all those 50's sci fi movies where they stock footage of radiotelescopes and rocket launches at the beginning while a deep voiced announcer talks about man's progress.
