What the heck is World Trigger?

So what the heck is this anyway? It keeps getting recapped in Weekly Manga Recap by Y The Ruler of Time and Rollo T and it sounds like its pretty awful or something. At least something about duckfaces. Anyway, page for it is rather short and says it needs more love so is it a bad series, average one or good one?

It's a fairly new WSJ series. Summary, stolen from elsewhere: "A gate to another dimension has burst open, and from it emerge gigantic invincible creatures that threaten all of humanity. Earth's only defense is a mysterious group of warriors who have co-opted the alien technology in order to fight back!"

You should be able to find it in the usual places

It's a pretty slow and surprisingly optimistic Invasion Shonen. Think freezing but without all the onscreen death or attempted rape.

It had a very weak beginning, but managed to escape cancellation long enough to find its feet. Not a particularly good manga, more middle of the road.

Agreed on this manga being average fare.

Hmm, okay. I guess I'll check it out if I get bored enough.

[up][up] See what I said about the series a while back? Scratch that, I was stupid to judge too quickly.

Reviving this thread to get some conversation going because I think it deserves it. It's fantastic. The Trion system is well-thought out, the battles are very tactical relying heavily on teamwork and coordination and hell even outside the fights it's more cerebral than your standard high school battle manga, or hell, battle manga in general.

Oh, and avoid the anime. evil grin

But I already made it to Episode 13. I can't just back down now.

Is this the part where things start to pick up? Jin just confronted the away squad with the red squad from the third episode, and Osamu lost to a capybara.

[up] Yes, actually. Whether the anime adapts it decently is another question.

So I heard manga gets better. So I read it and at least there are less duckfaces, I guess its better but I can't judge since my standards are pretty low anyhow

Anyway, I just want to comment that anime's low animation quality in first episodes at least is kinda amusing :p

[up] I don't know what you're talking about. For their to be low animation quality there first has to be animation rather than just a bunch of static images. waii

Oh hey, I forgot about this thread.

I finally transferred over to the manga a while back (when the anime finished the ranked battle against Suwa and Arafune squad) and read the 20 or so chapters that came after that point. And wow...the manga is a vast improvement over the anime in terms of pacing and execution. The battle scenes are well choreographed, the exposition isn't overbearing, and there's no awkward still shots or overused "Lying to Konami" jokes.

The manga has really made me come to appreciate that the battle system is set up so that victory favors those with teamwork, strategy, and experience over those with large power levels and the Power of Friendshipβ„’. Sure, I currently don't know or care who those bit characters are, but it's neat that their contributions are very crucial to success whatever mission is at hand. The latest rank battle where Tamakoma 2 got wrecked by the top tier B rank squads due to their lack of skill and experience was brutal, but it really drove the concept home and made me appreciate this series even more.

As for current events in the manga: I'm really enjoying the Rank Wars, even if the Neighbor plot was put on the back burner for the time being, since the series really shines when it focuses on team battles.

Can't wait to see how Osamu exploits Hyuse's desire to go back home in order to get him to join his team, as well as how that kid plans to help Chika with her fear of shooting other people.

According to the mangaka, the anime is going to be doing a filler arc for the next little while.

Eh...I decided to check out the filler.

Overall, it feels like a poorly budgeted Pokemon movie in more ways than one.

I think it's the best manga in Shonen Jump these days. Maybe I'm just biased towards sci-fi or realistic bouts. But I love the characters the most. You know how, lately, a lot of franchises are doing this thing where every character is flawed? Here every character has good points. Border is made up of friendly rivalries with everyone helping each other improve. And even the villains have good reasons for their actions and agreeable natures. This is probably the first series in a long time where the main character is my favorite character. Ah, Mikumo-kun, doing the best he can for everyone. Meanwhile, my second favorite is Amo. Super powerful and doesn't give a damn about anything? Comedy gold.

Right now it's my favorite battle manga in Shonen Jump because I'm a sucker for tactical battles.

Is Amo the mysterious super strong Black Trigger guy who has only appeared in the series a few times? While I don't particularly care about him yet, one of the recent chapters has made me curious about his side effect.

The moment where I really started to appreciate Mikumo-kun's character was when he gave the Aftokrator captain a really bad day by turning off his trigger, then duping his entire invasion with the dummy cube. And the scene didn't look half bad in the anime.

Im watching the anime and Im LOVING IT. I even had a dream about it. Sure the concept of Triggers lends itself to wish fulfilment dreams but I loved it as well.

Also Im staying away from this thread to avoid spoilers!

There's like...no discussion in the thread, so spoilers should be a non-issue. [lol]

Did you enjoy the anime right off the bat? It honestly took a very long time for me to warm up to this series due to its abysmal pacing and QUALITY animation.

To be honest, you are right. I HATED the first episode (I watched it when it first premiered) but last week (Almost a year later) I decided to watch episode 2 then 3 then 4 and I got hooked. Im on 25 by now. It helps that I dont care about Pacing and so on. Manga is too fast for me if anything lol.

I dont have any problems with the animation either. I feel its mediocre, sure but not show ruining for me.

The only thing that kept me going was the promise of well thought out fight sequences (and the fact that the manga would always be an option), and it eventually delivered. And as long as the animation isn't as atrocious as the Saiki Kusuo flash animation, I can deal for the most part.

There's was one episode in particular that I really enjoyed, but the climax was so badly drawn out that it stumbled into hilarity. Don't remember which episode it was exactly but it was somewhere between where you are now and Episode 30.

I read that as Badly Drawn.

But yeah, World Trigger really LOOOOOVES to stretch stuff painfully. I still love it.

Ashihara-sensei thought of every character's motivations. I like these new characters in the manga already!

Ch 121: No wonder Kitora mentioned that a week's worth of training won't bear results right away. She speaks from personal experience because she had to struggle with her own low Trion level.

It would be really cool if the new human shaped Trion soldiers can shape shift into Border agents. The pandemonium would be glorious.
